Cold Plunge Benefits and How to Build One in Your Backyard with Bask Pools + Outdoors

Cold plunges, the act of quickly immersing the body in cold water, are gaining popularity due to their numerous health benefits. This simple yet effective practice can positively impact both physical and mental well-being. We had the opportunity to sit down with Robin Ferguson, ACE Certified Fitness Trainer and Health Coach, to talk about the benefits of taking a cold plunge!

Physical Benefits

  • Reduces muscle soreness and inflammation – Helps with post-exercise recovery.

  • Boosts the immune system – Strengthens the body’s natural defenses.

  • Accelerates metabolism– May aid in weight regulation.

  • Improves skin appearance – Tightens pores and enhances skin texture.

Mental Benefits

  • Enhances mood – Triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s natural chemicals that make us happy.

  • Reduces stress – Lowers cortisol levels and promotes relaxation

  • Builds mental resilience – Strengthens discipline and tolerance to discomfort

The ideal frequency for cold plunging depends on your goals. For active individuals who exercise regularly, cold plunging three times a week, 4 minutes each time, for a total of 12 minutes is recommended. Exactly when one should plunge also depends on your goals. To help reduce inflammation, speed up recovery, and reduce soreness, right after a workout is fine. If your goal is muscle building, avoid cold plunging immediately after strength training. When you work out, your muscles develop microscopic tears that need time to heal and grow. Jumping into a cold plunge right after can accelerate healing too quickly, potentially interfering with muscle growth. Instead, consider cold plunging the next day to receive cold plunging’s benefits. If your primary goal is to reduce stress and boost your overall mood, daily cold plunging is safe and beneficial. The key is consistency and listening to your body.

Cold plunges are typically done in water ranging from 40–55°F, though some may go slightly lower. While this practice is generally safe, it’s important to recognize who should avoid it. Individuals with preexisting health conditions and pregnant women should most likely avoid cold plunges. Anyone unsure should consult their doctor before trying it.

Cold plunges offer a range of benefits, from improved recovery to enhanced mood and stress relief. By understanding your goals and adjusting your routine accordingly, you can safely incorporate cold plunges into your wellness regimen. Whether you’re an athlete or simply looking for a natural way to feel better, this practice can be a refreshing and effective addition to your lifestyle.
