Lap Swimming

Lap swimming is the exercise that immediately comes to mind for most people. Its health benefits have long been heralded as superior to many cardiovascular exercises performed on land. It works muscles throughout the entire body, increases cardiovascular strength and endurance, and is safe for most populations. Much of its benefits are derived from its aquatic environment — the pool.

A pool provides two main benefits to your exercise routine:

Increased Resistance

Water offers up to 800 times more resistance than air, which means even simple tasks like walking, when performed in water, can move from a mild cardiovascular task to a resistance workout offering cardiovascular benefits. Increased resistance helps your muscles to engage more fully and improves your overall strength and endurance over time.

Increased Buoyancy

Our bodies’ ability to float in water, or buoyancy, is the result of an interaction of the differences of the forces of gravity between ourselves and water. In essence, the pull of gravity is significantly reduced when our bodies are in the water. This is why astronauts train underwater! By providing a much gentler environment in which bodies can move, our bodies are more supported and can perform more movements with greater ranges of motion underwater. And for those with joint conditions, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis, aquatic exercises can be incredibly beneficial.

If you want to increase the intensity of pool workouts, simply add resistance. Things like foam dumbbells, a kickboard, resistance gloves, or a buoyancy belt can all function as accelerators to progress when used correctly.

Here is a list of simple exercises that can be performed for your next pool workout:

  • Walking in water
  • Jumping jacks
  • Bicycle kicks
  • Tuck jumps
  • Noodle planks
