Swimming pool pro tips for when the temps drop below freezing

Freezing temperatures are here, and while gumbo pots are simmering, pool owners have a list of checks that need to be performed to keep their pool in tip-top shape. Help protect your pool equipment during freezing weather by following our these tips. If you’re unsure about your system or need assistance, give us a call (337) 806-9800. We’re here to help ensure your pool stays safe this winter.

Make certain the main pool pump, water feature pump and cleaner pump are running continuously while the temperature is below freezing.
If you have a freeze protection device, you have an added layer of protection and a bit more peace of mind. This device will automatically turn the pump on when the temperature drops to approximately 38 degrees, and keep your pool running as long as the temperature remains close to freezing. Completing a quick visual check the next time the temperature drops to around 38 degrees will ensure your device is activating properly. If the pool does not turn itself on, you can always call Bask Pools to have the issue resolved.

Ensure your pool is clean.
A clean pool is a happy pool, always. If your skimmers and main drain become blocked with leaves and other debris, it can stop the pump from moving enough water to prevent freezing. Put on a heavy coat, and maybe even some gloves, and continue to clean the skimmer baskets — daily if necessary.

Maintain proper water levels.
If the water level drops too low, your skimmers will run dry and cause the pump to lose prime. If this happens there will be no water movement through the pool equipment and the plumbing is certain to freeze.

Drain the backwash line.
This applies to pool owners with a sand filter, as these have a tendency to retain water. If not drained, they can freeze and break.

Open the cover.
If your pool has an automatic cover, open it fully. This prevents ice from forming on top of the cover while ensuring water features do not turn on with the cover closed.

Remove the pool cleaner, drain and store it.

Turn off or disconnect your autofill and drain the line

If you lose power, DO NOT FORGET YOUR POOL!

In the event of a power outage, take measures to protect your pool and equipment.

Remove all drain plugs from every piece of equipment in the system (i.e. pumps, filter, and heater).

Manually shut off the power supply to the equipment so it does not immediately turn on when the power returns.

Cover the pool equipment with tarps and blankets to help protect your equipment and plumbing from freezing.
